Head and Neck scanning

Overview

Ultrasound can be extremely useful for evaluating superficial soft tissue structures of the head and neck, providing detailed assessment of salivary glands, lymph nodes, thyroid glands, and other soft tissue masses.

High-frequency ultrasound probes allow excellent resolution of these superficial structures and can often distinguish between cystic, inflammatory, and solid lesions.

Common indications include:

  • Investigation of cervical masses
  • Assessment of mandibular and retropharyngeal lymph nodes
  • Salivary gland enlargement or suspected sialocele
  • Thyroid gland evaluation
  • Ultrasound-guided sampling of superficial masses or lymph nodes
