High-frequency ultrasound probes allow excellent resolution of these superficial structures and can often distinguish between cystic, inflammatory, and solid lesions.
Common indications include:
- Investigation of cervical masses
- Assessment of mandibular and retropharyngeal lymph nodes
- Salivary gland enlargement or suspected sialocele
- Thyroid gland evaluation
- Ultrasound-guided sampling of superficial masses or lymph nodes
