Canine Osteosarcoma

Overview

Canine osteosarcoma (OSA) is an aggressive form of bone cancer that accounts for approximately 85% of all bone cancers in dogs and most commonly affects the long bones of large and giant breed dogs, though it can occur in other bones, including the jaw and the pelvis, and rarely in soft tissues (extraskeletal osteosarcoma).

It arises from bone-forming cells (osteoblasts) and leads to destruction of normal bone tissue and the formation of painful, abnormal bone.

The disease often spreads (metastasizes) to other parts of the body, most frequently to the lungs, often before any obvious symptoms are noticed.

COMMON SITES AFFECTED
